Malaysia's Production, Consumption and Trade of Rubber


Production

  • Production of rubber in Malaysia declined by 3.2% year-on-year to 795.9 thousand tonnes in 2016 as compared to the previous year.
  • During the first six months of 2017, 441.6 thousand tonnes of rubber were produced in Malaysia, increasing 19.7% from 369 thousand tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
  • NR made up 84.6% of total production of rubber in 2016 with 673.5 thousand tonnes, a 6.5% drop as compared to the previous year.
  • Production of SR totalled 122.4 thousand tonnes in 2016  which was a substantial rise of 21.5% from 2015.

Consumption

  • In 2016, consumption of rubber reached 903.9 thousand tonnes, a 4% growth from 2015.
  • In the first six months of 2017, total rubber consumption was 483.7 thousand tonnes compared to 443.3 thousand tonnes in the corresponding period of 2016.
  • In the first six months of 2017, 246.6 thousand tonnes of NR were consumed in 2017, a growth of 23.5% from the first 6 months of 2016.
  • In 2016, total SR consumption was 417.7 thousand tonnes, an increase of 6% in comparison with the previous year.

Import

  • Total imports of rubber in 2016 decreased by 2.6% year-on-year to 1.34 million tonnes.
  • In the first half of 2017, Malaysia imported 746.3 thousand tonnes of rubber, a 15.4% rise compared to the previous year.
  • Imports of SR increased by 26.1% year-on-year to 195.6 thousand tonnes in the first six months of 2017.
  • Since 2015, Malaysia has been a net importer of rubber.


Export

  • In 2016, rubber exports recorded a decline of 6.9% to 1.11 million tonnes, compared to 1.20 million tonnes in 2015.
  • During the first half of 2017, Malaysia exported a total of 658.7 thousand tonnes of rubber, a substantial rise of 18.9% compared to the first six months of 2016.
  • SR exports totalled 113.8 thousand, a growth of 8.9% compared to the previous year.
  • NR was the biggest export in 2016, accounting for 90% of the total export of rubber.
