Industry Overview

World Production, Consumption and Trade in Rubber


Production

  • Global production of rubber grew at an average annual growth rate of 2.7% to 28.4 million tonnes in 2017 from 23.7 million tonnes in 2010.
  • Natural rubber (NR) accounted for 47% of world rubber production in 2017 with 13.4 million tonnes.
  • Synthetic rubber (SR) made up 53% of global production of rubber in 2017 with 15.1 million tonnes.

 

Consumption

  • World consumption of rubber increased by 2.7% year-on-year to 28.3 million tonnes in 2017 from 27.5 million tonnes in 2016.
  • Total NR consumption in 2017 was 13.1 million tonnes, a 4.0% increase from the previous year.
  • Total SR consumption was 15.2 million tonnes in 2017, an increase of 1.6% from 2016.
  • China, USA, India, Japan, Thailand, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Germany and Russia were the top 10 consumers of rubber in 2017.

 

Trade

  • Rubber imports rose by 8.6% to 23.0 million tonnes in 2017 from 21.2 million tonnes in 2016.
  • Global exports of rubber rose to 21.9 million tonnes in 2017, a 10% increase from 19.9 million tonnes in 2016.
